Cameron Norrie earned the most notable win of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a current world No 1.

"Huge. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Returning from health issues last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my tennis journey, my first win over the world No 1 and likely the strongest player in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also ended Alcaraz's dominant run of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event wins, which represented the top run of results in the young champion's early professional path.

Contest Overview

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he eased past the opening set. However, the British contender gradually battled back into contention by delivering with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into prolonged, demanding exchanges. His persistent consistency and dependability gradually made an impact.

For much of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to find his timing with his rally strokes. The young star seemed especially uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the sport for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes.
