French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
