Anthony Joshua Doubles Down on Controversial "Kill" Statements Directed at Paul
Anthony Joshua repeated his controversial remarks about wanting to “kill” his opponent during a media gathering in Florida on Wednesday.
The remarks were first made on the previous day when Joshua was questioned if he would show restraint against the social media star, replying that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.
Saturday's bout against the YouTuber-turned-boxer has attracted criticism over safety concerns and the size difference between the two fighters.
Tyson Fury Labels AJ a “Classless Loser”
Former titleholder Tyson Fury labeled Joshua a “classless loser” for his inflammatory rhetoric.
But the 36-year-old fighter, justified his stance: “This is my profession, we fight. We have a license that permits extreme violence.
“I understand many people don't understand it but this is what my job is. I just enjoy what I do. Whatever happens, happens - as long as my hand is raised, that's what's important, with all due respect.”
He added, “That's just the mentality we have to have as warriors. I'm unsure if other fighters think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more conservative. The way my mind works. When you're in the squared circle, it's a risky thing. Everything can happen.”
“You wish your opponent exits the ring unharmed, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed knowing you just did your job. It was not personal.”
Paul's Fiery Response
Paul, a massive outsider in the heavyweight contest as a natural cruiserweight, was equally combative in his retort.
“This is a contemporary gladiator sport,” Paul declared. “I'm prepared. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be zero excuses when it's all said and done. Let's kill each other.”
Joshua will face Paul, in his twenties, at Florida's Kaseya Center in a bout many see as a glaring mismatch, with some arguing it should have been approved as an exhibition bout.
The official fight will be fought over 8 3-minute rounds using regular 10oz padded gloves, with a specified maximum weight for the former champion.
Joshua Says He Was “Called In to Rescue” Boxing
Despite the extreme terminology used, the fighter suggested he has been “brought in to rescue” the sport of boxing.
“They want me to stop the Jake Paul phenomenon and I understand it and that's why I have to bear the sport on my back in this fight,” he added.
The event also had lighter exchanges, with Joshua smiling as his rival sang ‘London Bridge Is Falling Down’ to him.
The face-off passed without incident, with Paul adopting a unusual posture before the champion remained composed and playfully touched Paul's chain.
Paul & Joshua Deny Pre-Arranged Allegations
The unusual nature of this fight has led to rumors about its authenticity, including claims that he may be prohibited from knocking Paul out.
“There are no clauses in the agreement, Joshua can confirm it. We're going to war,” Paul said.
Joshua, sporting a valuable necklace, jokingly added, “The only thing in the contract that got my attention was the purse.”
He has claimed on his platforms that the fight earnings will be exceptionally high.
Largest Shock in Boxing History?
Jake Paul first gained fame as an online prankster, amassing a massive social media following.
He has never fought anyone of Joshua's skill level but insisted that his opponent would take him seriously.
“It's smart on his part,” Paul commented. “This could possibly be, and will be, the largest loss of his career.”
A victory for the underdog would be perhaps the biggest surprise in the boxing's history.
It would certainly leave an permanent mark on Joshua's record, but the athlete stated it would not mean retirement.
“I'd come back again, move on,” he said. “I will be headlining again in a couple of years. It is what it is. I'm a competitor in the game.”
