An Significant Milestone when Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"Rosenior represents an excellent coach who knows football inside out, and that's what matters most.

"However, as Chelsea's pioneering black player, it would be dishonest if I said this moment does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

There have been a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"When youngsters see a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions equality… that's powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout English football corresponds with a lack of representation in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers are from black heritage.

Yet, research from Kick It Out found just 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of talent that exists in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to persist in striving to break those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails Europe's other major leagues regarding homegrown managers.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten of the 18 are French.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational for up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual land such a role with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with the likes of Fulham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint at then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed a path in management. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that race does not determine ability arguing that roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: how vast under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.

Elliott later worked in multiple senior positions, among them the Football Association's diversity and inclusion board|
